Waihi Recreation and Community Centre Project

Sport 'N' Action Waihi

The central focus of the Sport’n’Action Trust is the progression of the Waihi Recreation and Community Centre project. The project is moving steadily forward thanks to a committed group of Trustees, a skilled Project Development Team and an engaged User Group.

Community Focus

The development at Morgan Park is intended to cater to the needs of the entire community. It is a place to exercise for health and vitality, and to meet and socialise with friends and family. It is a place to be competitive, as well as a place to play, or simply sit and relax.

A key objective of the Centre will be to assist in the achievement of wider social objectives through the varied programmes and activities that will be undertaken there.

The Centre and the park will also form part of a linked network of reserves providing extensive recreational and leisure opportunities for the community.

Activities

The Sport’n’Action Waihi Trust is involved in many facets of Waihi’s sporting and recreation environment. Jo Heath, our Sport ’n’ Action Waihi Co-ordinator (amongst other things) currently:

  • Manages the Waihi Events Centre
  • Manages Morgan Park The Hub Building
  • Develops and runs school holiday programmes
  • Develops and runs various exercise groups
  • Liaises with clubs and Sport Waikato to develop various codes and events
  • Co-ordinates and manages volunteers for The Nugget Multisport Festival, Trail Trilogy, and Trail Challenge Waihi running events

Regular organised group walks around Waihi target all members of our community and are great for those people who want to socialise through exercise, see some of the countryside and learn about our local environment and history – all without having to join a club.

The Echo Walking Festival is an event that Sport’n’Action Waihi helps organise. This is a great event to get behind as it promotes Waihi as an active community with significant outdoor visitor infrastructure.

Holiday Programmes

Holiday ‘sports’ programmes always prove popular. Activities included basketball, badminton, mountain biking, train rides, walking, inline hockey, tennis and even surfing at Waihi Beach.

ACTID8

Enjoy being active but don’t know anyone else who does?

If you need an activity ‘buddy’ for bush walks, street walks, jogging, cycling (or anything else ‘active’), you can register your name and contact details with Jo Heath at Sport’n’Action Waihi and we can organise a ‘date’ with someone of similar interests. It’s easy, heaps of fun and a great way to meet like-minded people.

Working with the Community

We continue to work with:

  • Vision Waihi Trust / Waihi iSITE Visitor Information Centre
  • Sport Waikato
  • Waihi Community Resource Centre
  • Go Waihi
  • Waihi Community Forum
